AIDS Was Created By Polio Experiment, Claims Pat Robertson

Earlier this week, Pat Robertson warned that demonic spirits could possess household objects and cause headaches.

Robertson shared more of his medical knowledge today on the 700 Club when he claimed that AIDS was caused by a botched polio experiment performed by the World Health Organization, noted RightWingWatch.org (video below).

“AIDS, where did it come from? From what I can gather, I think the World Health Organization was doing some experiments in the Congo on a monkey virus, a monkey injection to fight polio and, it wasn’t an injection, they put it in sugar cubes and they gave it to these Africans, a couple hundred thousand in the test,” Robertson declared.

“And this is the first time when monkey diseases crossed into the human condition and out of that has come this terrible thing. It seems to be transmitted so often through sexual contact and it was rife in the homosexual community, but has then jumped into the heterosexual community.”

Robertson was likely referring to the “oral polio vaccine (OPV) AIDS hypothesis,” which has been repeatedly debuked, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Science Magazine stated in 2001:

At an unusual Royal Society meeting in London last September, a controversial theory that a contaminated polio vaccine triggered the AIDS epidemic was all but pronounced dead. Now, a paper in this issue (see p. 743) and three more in this week’s issue of Nature collectively nail the lid on the coffin of the theory.

The theory was again debunked in 2004 in the science journal Nature:

Here we show that SIVcpz is indeed endemic in wild chimpanzees of this region but that the circulating virus is phylogenetically distinct from all strains of HIV-1, providing direct evidence that these chimpanzees were not the source of the human AIDS pandemic.
