You may want throw the old ‘apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’ adage out the window on this one…

Brad Pitt and his fiancee Angelina Jolie said at one time they would not get married until same-sex couples are allowed to do the same, but apparently the actor’s mother does not share his views.

Jane Pitt wrote a letter to her hometown paper, the Springfield News-Leader on Tuesday, slamming President Obama as a proponent of abortions and calling on fellow Christians to support the presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, according to E! Online.

‘Any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon,’ the letter reads.

The letter to the editor was in response to a previously published letter by a reader who urged voters to shut out Romney because of his religion.

Mrs Pitt identified herself as ‘a Christian [who differs] with the Mormon religion.’

Mrs Pitt goes on to write that ‘any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama – a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage.’

The publication of the controversial letter was accompanied by some confusion over whether it was written by Brad Pitt’s mother, but the Missouri newspaper confirmed her identity on Thursday in an Editor’s Note.

Jane Pitt, left, wrote a letter to her hometown paper speaking out against same-sex marriage, which her son Brad Pitt, right, has been championing.

‘To clear up earlier confusion, the News-Leader has verified the letter writer is the mother of actor Brad Pitt and local businessman Doug Pitt,’ the note stated.

The revelation comes as a shock to many since Brad Pitt and Jolie have long been outspoken and staunch supporters of President Obama and same-sex marriage.

In December of 2011, the 48-year-old actor told the talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who is herself a lesbian: ‘I’ve said that we would not be getting married until everyone in this country had the right to get married.’

The Hollywood power couple, who have six children together, eventually gave in and announced their engagement in April, but have yet to set a date.

In January, Pitt said of his mother in a cover profile in The Hollywood Reporter: ‘She’s very, very loving — very open, genuine, and it’s hilarious because she always gets painted in the tabloids as a she-devil. There’s not an ounce of malice in her. She wants everyone to be happy.’

In September of 2007, Us Weekly reported that Pitt donated $100,000 to the campaign against Proposition 8, California’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage.

At the time, Mr Pitt said: ‘Everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another and because discrimination has no place in America.’

This past March, Pitt and George Clooney took part in a star-studded reading of the play 8 by Dustin Lance Black that revolves around the 2010 court case Perry vs. Schwarzenegger, which challenged the legality of Proposition 8, according to the Huffington Post.
