The chairman of the California Democratic Party resigned on Thursday, a day after a bombshell report detailed allegations of sexual misconduct from several colleagues.
Eric Bauman said in a statement to The Los Angeles Times that he believes it’s “in everyone’s best interest” for him to step down as party leader.
“I have made the realization that in order for those to whom I may have caused pain and who need to heal, for my own health, and in the best interest of the Party that I love and to which I have dedicated my life for more than 25 years, it is in everyone’s best interest for me to resign my position as chair of the California Democratic Party,” Bauman said.
The California Democratic Party did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Fellow party leaders, including Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom (D), had in recent days called on Bauman to quit amid the allegations.
Those calls grew louder on Wednesday after The Los Angeles Times published a story in which 10 state Democratic party staffers and activists described instances they said Bauman made vulgar or sexually explicit comments or gestures in recent years.
