China’s anti-porn agency, the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications, revealed in a Sunday statement that the country is launching a new campaign which will be aimed at stopping pornographic content from spreading on the Internet.

The new campaign – called ‘Cleaning the Web 2014’ – marks the latest anti-porn effort to be undertaken by the Chinese government. In a 2013 campaign, the Chinese government shuttered over 270 pornographic and violent websites.

As part of the ‘Cleaning the Web 2014’ campaign, the anti-porn agency will carry out comprehensive checks of websites, search engines, mobile app stores, Internet TV USB sticks, and set-top boxes to ensure that they neither contain nor promote pornography in the country.

According to a circular released by the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications, the ‘Cleaning the Web 2014’ campaign will last till November 2014. During the campaign, online texts, photos, videos, and advertisements with porn content will be deleted.

Three other offices will help the National Office in carrying out the campaign. These offices include the State Internet Information Office, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Public Security.

The circular also said that websites, web channels and columns will either be shut down or have their administrative license revoked if it is found that they are involved in producing or spreading pornographic information or material.
