BCTT8H This illustration dates to 1891 and is a fanciful depiction of Satan (also known as the devil ), lurking at the horizon, which was thought by many in centuries and millennia past to be the end of the world. Satan is shown with his hands (fingernails sharpened to points) about to nab a ship that has veered too far out in the open waters. Such tales kept many from daring to sail beyond sight of land.
