Has presented a bill that would force prostitutes to register with local authorities
A Victory Front (FpV) lawmaker wants to force sex workers in Buenos Aires City to register their names with authorities in order to legally carry out their activity.
The registration process is part of a larger bill that seeks to impose regulation on the sector in order to “distinguish sexual work from human-trafficking,” as the proposed legislation unveiled yesterday notes.
The bill was presented yesterday by both Georgina Orellano, the head of the Argentine Sex Workers Association AMMAR and Kirchnerite lawmaker Maria Rachid during a rally held at the CTA umbrella union on the International Day Against Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Women and Children.
When it comes to the bill’s objectives, Rachid has no doubts. In dialogue with the Herald, the Kirchnerite lawmaker stresses that there are two distinct goals: “recognizing the rights of sex workers and contributing to the fight against human-trafficking.” Rachid and Orellano see them as two sides of the same coin.
“If a registry is created, the activity would stop being clandestine,” Orellano told the Herald, further explaining that once the activity is regulated and monitored by the state, those clandestine places in which human-trafficking activities are conducted would be “heavily exposed” and could not hide as easily.
The regulation will also come with certain obligations attached.
