Malaysian censors target YouTube in crackdown on ‘unsuitable’ internet content

Malaysian censors are drawing up plans to block Internet content that does not adhere to guidelines set by the Film Censorship Board.

The Home Ministry in Putrajaya is working with the nation’s Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to set up a firewall to block content that is deemed unsuitable, and is expected to target YouTube in particular.

“We are working with the MCMC on this matter and I urge the commission to implement the system soon,” said Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi Monday.

“Content creators have to make sure their content does not lead members of society out of social and religious norms,” he added.

Malaysia’s censors have a reputation for banning movies, including major Hollywood productions, that have sexual, violent or religious content. Movies banned this year include ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘Noah’, and ‘Sex Tape’.
