A man has been charged in relation to the murder of four women whose bodies were found in Detroit last December, stuffed into the trunks of cars.
James Brown, 24, of Sterling Heights, Michigan, faces charges of dead bodies-disinterment of cousins Demesha Hunt, 25, and Renisha Landers, 24, and with arson and disinterment of Natasha Curtis, 29, and Vernithia McCrary, 28.
The bodies of Curtis and McCrary were found were found on Christmas day inside a burned car in the 14900 block of Lannette.
Six days earlier detectives had found Hunt and Landers dead in the trunk of a car in the 14400 block of Promenade.
Brown is not being charged with murder although an investigation is still on going. Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee said the delay in a homicide charge could hinge on the location of the murders.
He told a press conference that detectives believe the women were killed in a separate location to where their bodies were found dumped, but would not speculate further.
Chikita Madison, the distraught mother of one victim, told WXYZ.com: ‘We just want justice. We want closure. We have waited 4 months.’
Hunt’s mother, Denise Reid, told the Detroit Free Press: ‘I feel like dying, just dying.’
Three of the women were said by Detroit police to be involved in escort ads on Backpage.com, a website similar to Craigslist, although their families have fiercely denied they were escorts.
An attorney for the site claimed there were 21 others that the killer could have used to contact the women.
Godbee refused to comment on the relationship between Brown and the site.
Brown and a 32-year-old man were questioned by police on Tuesday in relation to the deaths. Brown was detained and his Sterling Heights home searched while the other man was released.
He is being held on a $500,000 cash bond for each of the two cases and will be back in court for a preliminary examination on May 17.
