The University of Hawaii at Manoa says a man who took photographs of women on campus has been identified.

The university’s Department of Public Safety said it received several tips after an alert was issued Monday.

UH officials said women were being photographed while they sat at bus stops, as they walked around campus, or as they waited at crosswalks.

According to UH, the man took the photos, then posted them, with names in some cases, to what officials describe as an adult website.

The photos are of women who are fully clothed, but UH officials say that they may not have known they’re being photographed.

The website also had derogatory comments attached to the photos.

“First, I think it’s an invasion of privacy and maybe there are some questions about whether it’s legal or not, but we want this campus to be a place where students feel safe and they can concentrate on their studies,” said UH spokesman Dan Meisenzahl. “To have this person walking around taking these pictures and posting them on this website is inappropriate.”

The bus stop on University Avenue and the crosswalk next to the law school are two locations where the man was said to have taken photos.

The photos have since been deleted and his account was closed.

UH says it is working with Honolulu police. If you have any information about this case, you’re asked to call UH campus security at 956-6911.

They were in a public place. You don’t need permission to take pictures of people in public. If you did, no cop would ever be video taped doling out wood shampoo.
