More Crimes Against Children

It seems like everyday in my local paper theres a child porn case. There has to be a better deterrent then the ones in place now. Automatic life sentence when the victim is under 13 years of age would be a good start. No I’m not saying molesting a 13 year old is ok.

In this day and age of 13 or 14 year olds that look 17 and 18 I could see where some high school kid could get caught up when dealing with a person strictly online. Over 13 should be dealt with on a case by case basis. Searching through my city’s registered sex offenders roughly 12% were within 3 years of there victims. Most of those cases were filed by angry parents.

Child molester who filmed crime gets 35-year sentence
Prosecutors agree not to indict him on porn counts.

A San Antonio man who filmed himself sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl was given a 35-year sentence Friday, one year after the images were discovered in a DVD player he had given to a mover.

John Robert Ray, 49, pleaded no contest to aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony punishable by up to life in prison.

In exchange for the plea before state District Judge Ron Rangel, prosecutors agreed not to seek indictments on numerous counts of possession of child pornography.

“He said he’s very, very sorry about this,” defense attorney William Davidson said after the hearing, pointing out that Ray had never been in trouble with the law before and immediately confessed when confronted by police. “He says this has never been done with any other child he’s been with.”

Ray was arrested last September, after he hired three movers to help him change residences and offered them several items that he was planning to discard, including a combination TV-DVD player.

The mover who took the TV called police the next day after his daughter turned it on and he saw the illicit images.

Although Ray’s face was not in the video, the man recognized items he had just moved, authorities said.

Ray felt compelled to take a plea, Davidson said, because of the looming possession of child pornography charges. Although such crimes carry a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison, prosecutors could ask that they be stacked.

After a search of Ray’s home, authorities reported finding more than 2,100 illegal images that they suspected had been downloaded from the Internet — each of which could have led to separate charges.

Friday’s plea was a good resolution, prosecutor David Henderson said after the hearing, pointing out that Ray will have to serve at least half the sentence before he could apply for parole.

“He’ll be in prison probably significantly longer than that amount of time,” Henderson said. “If the defendant is willing to plea to a substantial amount of time, then we have to take that into consideration.”

San Antonio man admits to child porn and obscenity charges

A San Antonio man has pleaded guilty to charges of distributing child pornography and possessing obscene material.

Micheal Moran, 19, entered the plea Thursday before U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez, just two months after getting indicted. He was taken into custody pending sentencing on Dec. 14.

An undercover investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement‘s Homeland Security Investigations netted 28 videos and 19 images of child pornography in Moran’s computer. The probe also found 24,000 images of animated child pornography, some of it depicting violent scenes.

Moran faces up to 10 years in prison on the obscenity charge and five years to 20 years on the distribution charge.

SW Ind. attorney enters plea in child porn case

PRINCETON, Ind. (AP) — A southwestern Indiana attorney could face three months of home detention after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography and obstructing justice.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/rfUPcV ) William Wallace III pleaded guilty Friday under a plea deal calling for an 18-month sentence on each count to be served concurrently. The 58-year-old would serve 90 days home detention and the remainder on probation.

Police searched Wallace’s home after a woman told prosecutors Wallace secretly videotaped her having sex with him and then showed her boyfriend the video.

During the police search, Wallace allegedly tried to hide evidence but his computers contained recordings of Wallace and the woman having sex and also a video of a man having sex with a child under age 16.
