Queer Film Festival poster featuring kissing men banned by Brisbane City Council

A POSTER featuring two men kissing has been banned by Brisbane City Council.

The proposed billboard for the Brisbane Queer Film Festival was deemed too explicit and organisers were told the material in question was not to be used.

Brisbane Lifestyle Committee Chairman Krista Adams said Council requested a stop on one of three proposed billboard advertisements for the Brisbane Queer Film Festival.

“We are mindful of the community’s views and believe that one of the three posters may be seen by many as too confronting,” she said.

“I have been advised that, in the meantime, an alternate billboard design will be used.”

Council said a review would be conducted by the Advertising Standards Board.

In a statement Brisbane Powerhouse, which hosts the event, said, “We’re still reviewing the campaign”.

My Kitchen Rules contestant Jake Harrison who features in the controversial material told The Courier-Mail he was still excited to be an event ambassador but was disappointed in the situation.

“It is annoying,” he said.

“As soon as this type of ad, featuring two gay men is used, it is deemed unfit for Brisbane’s eyes.

“Of course the best poster had to be torn down.”

Harrison also took to his twitter followers about the decision.

To one fan who complemented the reality star on the photo on Thursday evening he responded, “thanks! But it’s been torn down in Brisbane! Help us out by re-tweeting! :)”.

Other have also taken to social media to express their opinions.

“So the Brisbane City Council won’t let a poster of two hot guys kissing be used to promote the Queer Film Festival,” one said.

Another tweeted, “@Team_Quirk = not secure in their sexuality. They don’t like this picture”.

It’s nor the first time billboards featuring gay men have been removed in brisbane.

In 2011, safe sex advertisement targeting gay men was pulled down from Brisbane bus stops because of 30 complaints.

The ad featured an image of a gay couple embracing, holding an unopened red condom packet.

But after a social media campaign, the ads were reinstated.
