• You'd think something like that would interest the huge number of American feminists who have endless time and energy to squabble over the awfulness of porn, but nooo... It would be racist to pass judgment on another society's treatment of women when our own is still so primitive.

  Yeah, right, sure. Why not move to Pakistan and never have to worry about "the male gaze" again?

  It's not to be forgotten that Kate Millett, visiting post-revolutionary Iran, described the experience of going out in a chador "liberating." It's also not to be forgotten that she recanted that position after a few years of seeing that kind of liberation in practice.

  Somehow I don't predict a run on tickets to Pakistan by the followers of Gail Dines, even though pornography and prostitution are illegal there. The societies that are the most repressive of sexuality in general are also the most hostile toward's women's rights, an inconvenient fact that seems never to get brought up in the heated discussions of the "harms" of having to live with The First Amendment instead of Sharia law.
