From iconic characters to minor supporting players, superhero movie casting never fails to create a lot of discussion. However, while Ben Affleck being chosen for the role of Batman and the rumours surrounding Spider-Man have gotten people talking over the past couple of years, there’s no doubt that it’s female characters who end up being most closely scrutinised. Why? Their looks of course.
Take Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman for example. Rather than discussing whether or not the Fast & Furious star is right for the role and what she’ll bring to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the past eighteen months of so have seen thread after thread of people discussing how skinny her arms are and what her cup size is (something which the actress herself would end up addressing). Supergirl is another great example. Melissa Benoist is beautiful, but has been deemed too “plain” and simply not busty enough to play Superman’s cousin in the upcoming TV series on CBS.
This perception ultimately comes down to the way female characters are portrayed in comic books. Like male superheroes, they’re shown to be utterly perfect. For whatever reason, that means that they usually…well, they have the bodies that mostly only models and pornstars have basically!
