AIDS Walk Los Angeles has announced the PUMP Challenge Winners for its 30th Anniversary event, and the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee (APAC) — an independent organization representing adult film performers — has taken 1st place.
The HIV/AIDS group revealed that Team APAC led the pack of “three teams and ten Star Walkers™ who ‘Pumped Up’ their fundraising for the Pump Lounge Cocktail Party competition!”
“We are very excited about Team APAC’s progress in the AIDS Walk fundraiser. Not only is it for a good cause, but it also encourages performer unity. It’s great to see what performers can accomplish when they come together,” Chanel Preston, president and spokesperson for APAC, told TRPWL.
The world’s first AIDS Walk was developed by Craig R. Miller in 1984, during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Seeing the need for immediate action in response to this public-health emergency, Miller sought to fill the void left by the government’s negligible response to the crisis. Drawing on his experience as a political and community organizer, Miller’s approach combined grassroots activism with fundraising and other campaign strategies to raise both awareness and urgently needed funds for the fight against AIDS.
In the following years, AIDS Walk Los Angeles would become the largest AIDS fundraising event in California, bringing 30,000 participants together annually to fight HIV/AIDS. The event raises millions each year for AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), helping it provide vital services to thousands living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles, and run the county’s largest network of prevention programs.
Since 1985, AIDS Walk Los Angeles has raised more than $76 million to fight the disease in Los Angeles County, and the AIDS Walk movement has raised more than a half-billion dollars nationwide. The event, which has drawn over a half-million participants, serves as a model of grassroots fundraising and community activism for organizations across the United States.
APAC launched earlier this year, with its mission the advocacy to maintain and improve safety and working conditions within the adult film business. An organization created solely by performers, APAC gives adult industry talent organized representation in matters that affect performer health, safety, and community.
The 30th AIDS Walk Los Angeles will take place on October 12, 2014.
