Immigrant Sex Workers Say They’re Victimized by NYPD, Not Traffickers

Elizabeth Nolan Brown:

For the second time since September, The New York Times profiles one of the state’s specialized criminal courts created to handle prostitution cases, known as “human trafficking intervention courts”. This one, in Queens, sees largely Latin American and Asian defendants, including a large number of undocumented immigrants. Many turned to sex work with debt piling up and few other employment options.

This is, of course, precisely the cohort that gets white-savior boners popping. All those American-born sex workers on Twitter may insist they want rights not rescue, but surely these low-income, low-skill women are victims. Surely they’ll appreciate state power being used to help rend them from their wretched lives.

  • You'll notice it's yet another court system that is not using our program. When we had Sex Workers Anonymous meetings within the court system, and the "safe houses" - our members as their "sponsors" were also "advocates". If they were being abused - we would go to the press and help them file charges. If they were being railroaded by the court - we would find them private lawyers. What I've seen them do is to only allow these women access to programs that law enforcement has "control" over. We would not let law enforcement know where our members were or where our meetings were. If a man or woman wanted to skip her court date and run off - we protected her against the system. I've had them come at me with warrants to find out where someone had run off too and I stood up to it in court and refused to provide any information on our members. That's why they've had to exclude us. You want to know why "yoga" is okay? Because it's all under the control of the people who are exploiting them. They have also been denying them access to health care. When one of our members we're sponsoring needed to see a doctor and if the program they were staying in refused to help them - we'd take them to the doctor. https://www.aclu.org/reproductive-freedom/court-prohibits-religious-restrictions-government-funded-trafficking-victims I can trace every single program that shut us out - was on the receipt of money where they were also denying these prostitutes access to medical care. I have heard horror stories of them forcing them to keep the pregnancy, and then taking the baby away saying 'you're a prostitute - you can't be a mother" and then after they had the baby adopted out to a nice white couple - they then dumped this poor girl on the ground. What's been going on since 2008 is they've been getting federal money to hijack the system where the police and the right wing religious right fanatics have total control over these women - and then we get the "cast offs". But to keep their control they've made it so we couldn't speak anywhere either - and the whole "mis-information" to the sex industry also about us to piss your side off at us too. Not a week has gone by when I haven't found a video or website bashing the sex industry with our name attached that I had nothing to do with. Again, I can expose this conspiracy now and I have all the proof I need this was deliberate - but I need an attorney. Is there any attorney out there willing to help me shut this down?
