Girls in porn modify their bodies all the time. There are boob jobs and lip implants as far as the eye can see. Some of these girls have been pumped full of more silicone than semen. However, there weren’t too many porn actors who could be accused of ‘having a little work done’ until Owen Gray came along.
Police Officers. T.V Repairman. The Boy Next Door. There are plenty of these types of roles for actors in porn but Owen Gray could never pass for a blue collar cable repairman unless his toolbox was filled with bondage gear and a ball gag. Between his tattoos and his post-autopsy looking chest scar he is more likely to play a coroner then a quarterback.
He has a large Y shaped scar that stretches from his shoulders down his chest. “It’s not just cut,” says Gray, “it was skin removal. He actually cut flesh off of my body which is why it’s really wide and pronounced.” He looks like he should be on a slab in the morgue and not a porn set. When he first got into the biz he says, “I was under the impression I wasn’t gonna fit in.”
“I became really interested in body modification about 12 years ago.” he says. “I just started really getting into scarification in particular.” His reasons for doing so are similar to anyone else’s reasons for changing the way they look, “It really just revolves around what I’m attracted to and what I find attractive and beautiful.” He likes the results, “I feel more confident in my body and I feel more attractive to the people I want to be close to.”
His open mind towards his body extends to his sexual interests as well. “I haven’t really tried to identify myself as one thing,” says Gray. “The loosest term that I would say I could identify with is ‘queer’. I don’t perform gay scenes. I’ve been with predominantly women but I’ve been with guys, I’ve been with trans girls and trans guys. I’m pretty fluid.”
For Gray there is a strong connection between pleasure and pain. He first visited a dominatrix in his early 20’s. He says, “That was the first time I ever really experienced just being heavily restrained and beat intensely.” Now, he says that experiencing heavy BDSM can take him to “somewhat altered states.” Even when he is having skin removed from his body his reaction is not what you would expect, “A lot of times when I’m getting cut I’m very relaxed. I just lay there and relax and breathe through it.”
In a business dominated by macho men and MILFS Owen Gray has still managed to carve (pun intended) a name for himself. Most of his work has been for Kink.com. “I feel fortunate working with Kink,” he says, “It’s very San Francisco in the sense that people’s sexuality is a lot more flexible and people aren’t quite as image conscious.”
Kink’s bread and butter is BDSM porn and it was a natural fit as Gray is just as comfortable in a gimp outfit on camera as he is off. He says, “I had a lover that I experimented with, for the most part dominating her, tying her up and hitting her and slapping her, all consensual because she requested it” and adds, “Performing has just allowed me to do things that for the most part can only remain in the fantasy that porn can create like gang bangs, slave training, and public sex.”
Simulated violence and forced sex isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and Gray has nothing but respect for his female co stars, “I’ve done scenes with a lot of piss and all kinds of heavy double penetration, really rough sex, beating people up…” He adds, “A lot of times I’m blown away by the capabilities of a lot of the girls. A lot of them can take serious anal fucking for a few hours and be totally fine.”
While he may engage in outrageous sex on screen he’s still a fan of plain old vanilla sex when the cameras aren’t rolling. “When performing in porn you are more focused on creating the product for the consumer, stopping and starting and angling your body in technical ways to achieve the end goal.” says Gray. “While performing can still be exciting and really hot, it’s very rare that I feel an authentic desire from the person I am performing with. It is still a job and it makes sex in my personal life a lot more rewarding when I can feel that the person actually wants to have sex with me. The connection I have with people is what becomes more exciting a bit more so than the physical act we are doing.”
Being able to stand out among men who are sometimes considered just ‘prop dicks’ has served Gray well. He says, “Over the last year it’s progressed more and more to where I’ve built up a bigger body of work.” His life isn’t all gang bangs and slave training though. He went to cosmetology school and worked as a clothing designer and hairdresser.
He might use leather and chains on film but off screen he’s more likely to be working with fabric and metal, “I’ve been making things with my hands for my entire life and currently make one of a kind head dresses and costumes.”
Clearly he relishes creativity. From his career to his hobbies to his own body everything is visual. Everything is art. The porn industry certainly has its ups and downs. Tube sites have stolen profits and recent STD scares have caused some to leave the business altogether. While the future is uncertain, Owen Gray’s feelings towards those who embraced his uniqueness are clear, “I’ve been treated better by my employers and coworkers while performing in porn more than any other job I have had.”
