MARRERO, LA (WGNO) — Jefferson Parish deputies say a two-year-old boy who died at University Hospital had brain swelling, retinal hemorrhaging, and other injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
They say the case began on April 24 as a medical call to a home in the 600 block of Allo Avenue in Marrero. At the scene, deputies say they found two-year-old Hayden Umbenhower unconscious. The adult in the home at the time is identified as Seth Redell. According to deputies, Redell was the boyfriend of the boy’s mother and was supposed to be taking care of the child while the woman was out of town.
Deputies say Redell told them that the boy fell and was knocked unconscious. They say Redell claimed to put the boy in a cold shower to revive him.
Also at the scene, deputies say they noticed a heavy odor of marijuana. They say they found pot and drug paraphernalia in plain view.
While being questioned, deputies say Redell changed is story several times. He was eventually booked with cruelty to a juvenile. The following Friday, April 29, the boy died from his injuries and Redell was booked with murder.
Deputies say Redell has prior arrests for possession of marijuana along with aggravated robbery in 2007 in Ohio.
