Texas woman sues Facebook over revenge porn profile

HOUSTON (KHOU/CNN) – A Texas woman says Facebook has ruined her life.

She claims the social media company did not act fast enough to remove a fake revenge porn profile in her name filled with nude images that were not hers.

Now she is suing.

“I’ve been exposed… violated…” Meryem Ali said.

Ali asked us not to show her face.

She’s a private person, now involved in a very public lawsuit — suing Facebook for millions– but says she wants justice, not money.

“There is no reason this should have happened to me or should’ve happened to anyone else,” Ali said.

Ali alleges that an ex-friend set up a fake Facebook page under her name using pictures of her face superposed onto pornographic images.

He then sent links to Ali’s Family and friends.

“He would lure them in, he would add them and then show them these nasty images,” Ali said.

For months, Ali says she begged Facebook to remove the fake page.

But claims the social media giant ignored her requests.

She says Facebook only took it down after Houston police subpoenaed the company to find out who created the offensive profile.

“I just want to know why they have live people behind a telephone if you want to advertise with them, but if you want to get help for an impostor page, there’s no one to help you, you have to go law enforcement. That doesn’t seem right to me,” Ali said.

Ali is suing Facebook for 123 million dollars — that’s ten cents for each of the site’s 1.23 billion members.

She hopes the lawsuit protects other users, and teaches Facebook a lesson.

“Regardless of what happens, my name will be forever linked to a revenge porn Facebook lawsuit,” Ali said.
