UK government to expand web censorship to ‘extremism’ on YouTube

Financial Times reports that the UK will be expanding their censorship reach beyond pornography and into the realm of “extremism” on YouTube, with Google giving them the go ahead to do so

The “super flagger” status allows authorities to select content for the company to screen immediately. This applies to videos that may threaten national security.

The FT reports that in the past eight weeks, the UK government already took down 8,000 videos of extremist content compared to just 21,000 takedowns made during the preceding four years.

But the problem is that the targeted videos will likely not always be illegal.

Security and immigration minister James Brokenshire told the FT that his office was working to do more to combat content “that may not be illegal but certainly is unsavoury and may not be the sort of material that people would want to see or receive.”
