AshleyMadison.com, the website connecting married people looking to have an extramarital affair, has offered to purchase the naming rights for Belle Isle from the city of Detroit for $10 million for 10 years.
The proposed name is “AshleyMadison.com Island.”
Why the offer?
As stated in a letter of intent from the Canadian-based dating site to Mayor Dave Bing:
“We at AshlyMadison.com have read with continuing interest of your storied city’s ongoing financial issues, and we are now prepared to act and help. With an eye to improving cross border affairs, AshleyMadison.com is prepared to offer financial assistance to the city of Detroit by way of a mutually beneficial sponsorship deal.”
The city has until Thursday, November 21at 5 p.m. to accept the offer.
To those who are offended by the offer, the website’s founder and CEO Noel Biderman says: “People have had affairs long before we came to Detroit, and would happen long after we’re gone so you’re not accomplishing anything by creating any kind of censorship or barring our presence.” He made his comments and others to Fox 2’s Randy Wimbley in a phone interview Friday night.

Biderman claims one of his employees was mistakenly copied on an internal email where Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr seemingly suggested a counter-offer of $100 million.
What do you think the city should do?
