• I'm not surprised. A member of Sex Workers Anonymous told me she had HIV in 1988. She was too sick to work and no one would take her in but myself when she became too sick to work. She was living at the Mary Magdalene Project to try and stop escorting when she found she still couldn't stop so she reached out to us for help. Then when she became too ill to work - they put her out. So I took her in. She reached out to tell Charlie and ask for his help and he shunned her. After a while, she patched things up with her family and moved in with them. The last I heard was her mother telling me she had passed away. Knowing he had been exposed back in the late 1980's - I saw him not saying anything, but continuing to expose sex workers to the virus. I reached out to him to ask him to stop this behavior then and of course he blew me off. I called his dad about it whole told me he couldn't do anything about it as Charlie was an adult now. All I've been able to do before he said something publicly was what I've been doing - making sure everyone calling into our hotline has had a recent test. The problem I've been hearing about however is how difficult it's been getting year after year to get anonymous and free test done. The sites available to do this are getting fewer and fewer. At one point in Nevada there was only one such site. I've been trying to get an active HIV outreach going within the sex industry that isn't getting tested regularly but find everyone has been so busy shouting "trafficking" that no one has been actively reaching out to sex workers about HIV. i see porn performers get tested regularly before gigs - however those working a strip clubs and massage parlors don't. I have a feeling there is more to why he came clean. In 2015 the LAPD statistics will show no juvenile arrests for prostitution. Problem with that is no way to tell what the data is with respect to their HIV stats. Getting a private test doesn't tell the general public what the infection rates are - nor the grants sources funding HIV services either. It's mandatory to test for HIV after a prostitution arrest. I've tried getting the AHF to focus more on doing HIV outreach to the prostitutes vs. the porn performers who are way more likely to be infected especially knowing how much Charlies is plowing through them at any given time! Now he's made this declaration and people now know he's exposed a large number of escorts and porn performers - maybe we can get some help with respect to outreach and testing done!
