Daniel Radcliffe has opened up about filming a gay sex scene for his latest film with his director’s help.

The 24-year-old actor portrays American poet and Beat Generation icon Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings.

The movie about the early lives of Beat Generation writers Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs and Lucien Carr features features Daniel Radcliffe portraying a young gay man in love.

Radcliffe told Flaunt, for which he graces the cover of the November edition, that first-time feature film director John Krokidas helped him through the scene.

‘I was talked through it by the director. He would be telling me what I would be feeling in each take,’ Daniel said.

‘Basically, gay sex, especially for the first time, is really f—— painful. And [Krokidas] said that he had never seen that portrayed accurately on film before. He wanted it to look like an authentic loss of virginity,’ the actor said.

The star of the Harry Potter films said there was no difference in portraying a homosexual person in love.

‘I don’t think there’s any difference between how one falls in love. People express love differently, person to person, but it’s not gender or sexuality related,’ Daniel said.

‘The only difference it made was obviously the actual sex scene, of course,’ he said.

Kill Your Darlings was first screened in the US earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

The story revolves around the 1944 murder of David Kammerer, portrayed by Dexter star Michael C. Hall, after he stalks the younger Carr, portrayed by Dane DeHaan.

Carr during his trial claimed self defense and cited Kammerer’s aggressive sexual advances.

Carr’s friend – the famous poet and principled gay activist – Ginsberg was called as a material witness during the murder trial, as were fellow Beat poets Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs.

The movie also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Ben Foster and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Kill Your Darlings will open to wider audiences in the US on Wednesday.
