2 arrested inside Art Basel for disorderly conduct. Maria Valenzuela, Kalan Sherrard among demonstrators inside Miami Beach Convention Center
Miami Beach police arrested two people involved in demonstrations inside the Art Basel art fair over the weekend.
Maria Valenzuela, 20, of Miami, and Kalan Sherrard, 27, of Bellevue, Washington, were each booked on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence.
Sunday afternoon, off-duty officers working the show at the Miami Beach Convention Center were notified of a disturbance involving 30-40 demonstrators wearing masks. Security officers were leading Valenzuela and Sherrard out of the building when they were approached by the officers.
While Valenzuela and Sherrard exited the show, one officer noticed Sherrard begin to pull an unknown object out of his pants. When the officer grabbed Sherrard, he began screaming and disregarding instructions. According to the police report, Sherrard began resisting the officer’s efforts to control him and the unknown object.
Valenzuela then approached the officer from the rear when he was attempting to arrest Sherrard. Another officer then grabbed Valenzuela and handcuffed her with the assistance of a civilian in the crowd.
After being handcuffed, both Valenzuela and Sherrard began yelling obscenities towards the crowd.
The unknown item was discovered to be a prosthetic sex toy.
