Officials have seized more than 100,000 pornographic DVDs and magazines worth £1 million in raids on businesses in south London.
Inspectors from Westminster Council seized the hard core material in raids on lock-ups and garages in Merton and Wandsworth.
The material is suspected of being supplied to sex shops in Soho and the West End – as well as High Street newsagents.
The raids yesterday came after the council found 17 newsagents, out of 80 visited in central London, to be selling unclassified porn on their top shelves.
Cllr Nickie Aiken, Westminster City Council’s cabinet member for community protection and premises, said: “We believe we have uncovered a major wholesale supply ring distributing unclassified material to shops in Westminster.
“The disturbing issue is that a child going into a newsagents for a comic or some sweets could now come across some very unpleasant hard core material.
“The operation illustrates the scale of the illegal sex industry in London. My fear is that corner shops in Westminster and elsewhere in the capital are now the new frontier for the illegal porn industry in London.”
