The director of Exxxotica said Thursday he expects to bring his three-day porn expo back to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center this year. The mayor of Dallas really hopes he doesn’t.
For now, at least, Mike Rawlings’ spokesman Scott Goldstein says the mayor has no comment on the subject — other than a “no” offered in response to the question, “Does the mayor want Exxxotica to return in 2016?”
On Wednesday the Dallas City Council ended its two-day retreat with a half-hour executive session concerning Exxxotica, where porn stars and dominatrixes peddled their scantily clad wares and mingled with daytrippers turning fifty shades of grey and bright red. City attorneys were on hand for Wednesday’s private discussion with council members; so too were Dallas police officers.
It’s unclear, for now, what the council discussed behind closed doors. But following the meeting, Dallas City Manager A.C. Gonzalez said “there is the possibility of some action” at council next week concerning Exxxotica. “And that’s all I can tell you.”
It’s déjà vu all over again.
Last year, several organizations, chief among them the Dallas Women’s Foundation, asked Rawlings, Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Dallas Regional Chamber to keep Exxxotica out of the city-owned convention center.
The mayor told them he shared their concerns — “I am particularly worried about the message that our playing host to this convention might send regarding our city’s position on the sexual exploitation of women” — but that the city couldn’t block Exxxotica from using public facilities. Rawlings said the city risked being sued if it barred Exxxotica. That’s what the City Attorney’s Office told him.
