If you think your man’s porn watching habit is turning him into a chauvinist, you might have a bigger problem.
A new study found that watching porn does make men more sexist, but only a certain kind of man – one who is already disagreeable to begin with.
The study was conducted by researchers in Denmark who surveyed 200 men and rated their level of ‘agreeableness’.
Those who scored low in agreeableness were defined by ‘antagonism, coldness, hostility, suspiciousness, disagreeability, unfriendliness and self-interest.’
All of the participants were subjected to watching hardcore porn, and then after the study researchers measured their response to sexist attitudes.
But it was only the men with low levels of ‘agreeableness’ that showed any kind of rise in hostile sexist attitudes.
While it was only a modest increase of sexist reactions, the study’s lead author Gert Martin Hald believes that this particular sub-groups unique reaction underscores how pornography has different effects on different people.
Dr Hald, an associate professor in the department of public health at the University of Copenhagen, said the study is important because it will help researchers figure out who is most negatively effected by porn.
‘This could be used in prevention, education, or clinical interventions,’ he said.
