NASHIK, INDIA: The district officials and NGOs gave a unique turn to International Women’s Day celebrations by issuing Aadhaar cards to five sex workers on Thursday. The government has launched a drive to issue Aadhaar cards to sex workers even if they do not have any documents.
Apart from the five sex workers who were issued the cards on Thursday, the rest will be getting the cards on Friday. The Aadhaar cards will offer them a document of identity of being citizens of the country.
Kuldeep Pawar, project manager of Pravara Medical Trust, the NGO that works for the health of sex workers, said only five women were given Aadhaar cards because of some snag in the machine used to issue those. “We will give the Aadhaar cards to the rest from 11 am to 5 pm on Friday from our Bhadrakali office,” he said.
