We have all heard it before; anti-gay leader of the community is discovered to be leading a secretly gay lifestyle himself. As petty as it may seem, it’s not uncommon for high ranking members of the community to use anti LGBT platforms in hopes of garnering public support only to later have their own alternative lifestyle exposed. While this is a routine that keeps making headlines time and time again, rarely has the internet exploded with such outrage as it did when Reverend Matthew Makela, former pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church and School in Midland, Michigan, was discovered to be secretly having sex with men.
Earlier this week Makela’s Grindr profile was outed by a non-disclosed source to the website Queerty, the self-proclaimed internet source in gay and lesbian news. It has been reported that the former Michigan pastor confirmed his account, but has declined to say anything further. The backlash of comments attached to the article’s breaking news is a pretty good indicator of the public’s reaction, mostly consisting of sarcasm, anger, callousness, as well as a surprisingly strong consensus of indifference; most likely due to the frequency of similar past discoveries. In fact, this is at least the third high ranking community member who has been outed by the gay, bisexual, and bi-curious hook up app.
