Friday marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, the first day of summer and, of course, Hike Naked Day.

While not recognized or celebrated by every nudist group, Hike Naked Day takes place on the Summer Solstice each year. According to a press release from the Avalon Resort in Paw Paw, W.Va., “hikers and backpackers nationwide celebrate by hitting the trails ‘au naturale.'”

Hiking in the nude, no matter the day, is not legal in public places, such as the Appalachian Trail. At Avalon, however, hikers will have access to four miles of trails throughout the property there.

The clothing-optional resort will also host FaerieFest on Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight, as another celebration of the solstice. The festivities will include drum circles, vendors, body painting and a dance performance from the Aubergine Faeries, a fairy-themed belly dancing troupe. The final event of the evening will be a dance, the Faerie Ball, featuring a performance by West Virginia new-age band Option 22.

At the root of FaerieFest is a celebration of the mythical intermingling of between mortals and those from the realm of Fae, which occurs at the Summer Solstice. The realm of Fae includes creatures such as faeries, pixies, goblins, mermaids and gnomes.

Of course for the entire festival, attendees are encouraged to wear “your wings … and nothing else!”

Tickets are available by calling the Avalon Resort at 304-947-5600, or at the door. A $20 ticket provides admission into all of the festival activities, and use of all resort amenities.
