Talking to your parents about sex is awkward enough, but imagine having to reveal to them that you have sex on camera for a living.
Three porn stars are sharing how they broke the news to their families in a new book titled Coming Out Like a Porn Star, in which they share how their parents reacted to their X-rated career choices.
Cinnamon Maxxine, 28, of San Francisco, tells the New York Post that her dad and stepmother completely lost it when they discovered her daughter’s porn career online, after being suspicious of Cinnamon’s claims that she was only a burlesque dancer.
After not hearing from her parents for a month, Cinnamon’s stepmom Paula, 50, called her and said condescendingly: ‘I found your videos.’
Paula told her they were disappointed in her, and said she was doing a ‘disservice’ to feminism, while Cinnamon hit back, saying that being proud of one’s body is ‘real feminism’.
She was also angry with her stepmom for invading her privacy, saying that even though her videos were all over the internet, ‘porn performers deserve privacy, too’.
Cinnamon’s dad, meanwhile, asked his daughter whether she was doing porn because she was sexually abused.
‘It was such a cliché. They weren’t ready to handle a proper discussion about what porn is,’ she shares.
The porn star goes on to say that while her biological mother accepted her career, her dad and stepmom didn’t speak to her for more than a year.
However, last summer, they did visit her in San Francisco, although they all agreed not to discuss Cinnamon’s career.
‘It’s a process’, she says, adding: ‘Parents don’t raise their kids to do porn, so I can understand where they are coming from. But they need to get where I’m coming from.’
In addition to being a porn star, Cinnamon is also a performance artist and advocate for QPOC (Queer People of Color).
