Maggie’s Toronto Sex Worker’s Action Project is in trouble. The organization is facing a severe budget crunch that jeopardizes its work fighting for sex worker rights across Canada. Although the nonprofit is funded by government and donor dollars, Maggie’s still needs more contributions to both continue and expand their services. Thanks to their current Indiegogo campaign supported by notable porn stars Belle Knox, Mia Isabella, and Tasha Reign, Maggie’s now has an additional $10,000 to fund their work with.
The first nonprofit of its kind in Canada, Maggie’s Toronto Sex Worker’s Action Project was founded in 1986 by sex workers to provide outreach and resources to their community in the sex industry. According to the organization’s website, “Maggie’s mission is to provide education, advocacy, and support to assist sex workers to live and work with safety and dignity.“
Currently, Maggie’s is turning its attention to fighting Bill C-36, a piece of Canadian legislation that “makes it a criminal offense for sex workers to communicate for the purposes of gaining work or providing their services in a place where a minor might be present,” according to The McGill Daily. The bill also bans advertising for sexual services both in newspapers and on the internet. If passed, this legislation would affect sex workers by making the safest forms of business solicitation illegal.
“To stand together with our sisters, brothers and lovers in the face of Bill C-36, a bill that threatens many of our lives, will surely give Maggie’s the strength to continue in our fight for our rights to work and live in dignity,” says Amy Saunders, campaign director for Maggie’s.
The organization’s Indiegogo campaign went live on May 1 in anticipation of needing more resources to fight Bill C-36. Although Maggie’s has already raised more than their $10,000 goal, the campaign will remain live for another 12 days.
