Just over a week after being reelected as district attorney in Courtland County, Mark Suben held a press conference today to confess his past as a porn star in the 1970s, a charge he’d denied just a few weeks before the election. Suben, who’s held the office since 2008, admitted to lying in the days before the election, saying he used “bad judgement.”
“Recently materials have been circulated alleging that I was involved in the adult film industry about 40 years ago in New York. Those allegations are true,” he said. “I was an actor in adult films for a short period in the early 70s.”
And, since he was already in deep shit, he decided to rid his closet of other potentially embarrassing/politically damaging skeletons.
“I was also an actor in other venues including off Broadway, soap operas and commercial advertisements.”
Rumors of his acting days were started by an anonymous tipster, who, after attempting to persuade local news outlets to cover the scandal, took matters into his own hand and created a YouTube video detailing Suben’s glory days.
In the clip, which was uploaded yesterday, the tipster details Suben’s porn career through a simple IMDB search for Mark Suben, which turned up an alias, Gus Thomas. This “Gus Thomas” appeared in 13 movies, including Deep Throat Part II, Bedroom Bedlam, and Doctor’s Teenage Dilemma. The video also shows a series of excellent screen shots of Gus Thomas in action, which the YouTube user then matched to photos of Suben.
Before the YouTube video, Suben successfully denied the accusations. But with the video evidence, he had no choice but to come clean and apologize.
“A few weeks ago, when asked, I denied this to members of the press,” Suben said. “I regret that and I apologize for it. I was shocked and embarrassed to be confronted with this so many years later. I was embarrassed for my family and friends who have stood by me. I also denied my actions to my family, my friends and my staff.”
His spokeswoman, Aimee Milks (a decent porn star name in its own right), says Suben won’t resign.
