A perverted New Mexico sheriff’s deputy who used his authority to coerce women into allowing him to grope and photograph them has been sentenced to six years in prison.
Deputy Shawn Baca of Socorro County pleaded guilty to criminal sexual contact of a minor as well as two counts of extortion.
The charges stem from incidents in May last year where Baca used his position as an officer of the law to make women show some ‘skin’ to get out of traffic violations.
In one instance, Baca made a 17-year-old girl bend over while he felt her underwear under her skirt.
In another, the deputy asked a college student to lift up her shirt to show her breasts while he took a photograph on his phone.
Facing his victims in court, Baca was made to listen as they read out statements to the court.
‘I never felt so helpless or scared as I did in that moment,’ said one of the girls in Judge Edmund Kase’s court.
In the court on Friday, the college student told the judge that she is concerned with what Baca did with the image he took of her.
‘Were those photos downloaded? Sent to another viewer Saved somewhere where Shawn Baca or someone else can access them later?’ said the girl.
Before being sentenced the former deputy spoke in court before being embraced by his loved ones and led off to begin his prison sentence.
‘Please accept my apology, I meant no disrespect to you guys,’ said Baca to his victims and their families.
While the judge sentenced him to six years, the father of the 17-year-old girl also spoke out.
‘In my opinion, I believe he was a predator that was dressed in officers clothing,’ said the victim’s father.
In a surprising turn of events, Baca’s attorney claimed that his client was stupid and that some of the blame even belongs with his victims.
‘They could have taken the ticket,’ said Lee Deschamps.
‘This isn’t a deal where he just stopped people at random, alright?’
Upon release from prison, Baca will have to register as a sex offender.
