This series presents three sex musicals from the bicentennial year of 1976. Jimmy Carter was elected president, the Apple computer company was formed, Nadia Comaneci got a perfect 10, and The Ramones released their first record. But most importantly, the tiny sub-genre of the sex musical film blossomed with these three releases. Come kick off the holiday season with a trio of dusty, strange and erotic relics.

The First Nudie Musicalby Mark Haggard & Bruce Kimmel

In this campy spoof, a desperate young filmmaker tries to rescue his studio by making a porno musical. You’ve never seen anything quite like this, as the elaborate style of a ‘30s musical is blended with ‘70s tackiness. For adults but not explicit, it’s stuffed full of toe-tapping musical numbers such as “Lesbian Butch Dyke” and the classic “ Dancing Dildos.” “It’s the Star Wars of nudie musicals,” swooned Judith Crist, in the New York Daily News. (1976, 97 min, 35mm)

Let My Puppets Come by Gerard Damiano

Dec 20, 2012 7:30pm

Screening Room

“A farcical look at how the director made his best known film, Deep Throat, except this is a musical and the cast is almost exclusively composed of fornicating puppets. In a money jam, The Creative Concepts company decides to make a cheap porn to pay their bills. Unfortunately, their plans go awry as the director is more interested in art than profit and the mob slowly starts to muscle their way into the production. One of the strangest genre film composites ever made, Let My Puppets Come mixes song and dance with marionette sex.” – Joe Rubin, Doc Films (1976, 75 min, digital)
