Multiple eyewitnesses confirm that Mike South, an amateur pornographer from Georgia who regularly lectures the mainstream adult business about health and safety issues, is shooting boy/girl and multiple partner sex scenes without requiring full STD screening — even from amateur male talent “off the street”.
South is also accused of not providing his own test results to females before performing condom-less vaginal and oral sex with them; not requiring performer panel testing from female performers hired to have oral sex on multiple men in one scene; and not offering to wear a condom in scenes in which he will engage in vaginal penetration.
Participants in his shoots also claim that the only testing they have seen South require of the males in his bukkake scenes is an ELISA-based OraSure home HIV “swab” test, which the men purchase themselves and bring to set.
Over the years, Georgia gossip blogger and amateur pornographer Mike South has opposed every system of adult performer testing protocols and test result verification — from AIM Healthcare to FSC/PASS.
But it’s guys like South who are the reason the adult business needs such a system.
Last week, a dancer and amateur performer from Ohio named Jessica Chase came forward on TRPWL in the wake of an ugly post written by Mike South that referred to her as “Bimbo” and a “dumb bitch.”
Chase demonstrated that South was a vindictive liar and hypocrite, but in the course of researching that article we discovered there was much, much more to this story.
Jessica Chase had met South when he worked as a manager of a strip club in Dayton. Eventually, South released three scenes starring Chase, all of which were shot in Atlanta, Georgia (South’s neck of the woods): a boy/girl scene with South as male talent, and two bukkake scenes featuring multiple males.
On January 6, 2014, before driving to Georgia to work for South, Chase got herself tested through Talent Testing Service.
She recalls, “I went through Talent Testing on my own accord (he had actually told me not to waste the money because he tests everyone with an OraQuick HIV test).”
Chase arrived in Georgia on January 10, 2014, and stayed in a room South got for her at the Embassy Suites Atlanta – Perimeter Center.
That day, the two taped a condom-less boy/girl scene, including oral and vaginal sex, in her hotel room.
“He did NOT offer to use a condom,” says Chase.
“He told me he had been tested, and having known him previously [I] did not think he would lie about it. Obviously he did. He NEVER showed me lab results.”
Chase’s first bukkake scene was shot the following day, in the same room. The scene included oral sex with multiple men, and facial pop shots.
Chase says she was never shown lab test results for any of the other participants. The guys came in and were swabbed with an OraQuick test, then South logged the results and ok’d them to work.
As for the actual swab tests, Chase says South “did not provide them. The guys brought them.”
“All the guys apparently aren’t properly tested. I realized this when my partner Brian who was in the bukkake said he saw a written log that looked like testing dates and all were just handwritten OraQuick results. This was when I was in bathroom getting cleaned up after shooting so he and I could leave. I feel like an idiot for having trusted [South].
Just to make sure I have this 100% correct: Are you saying Mike South did not require talent (including yourself) to be tested for other STIs — gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, Hep C, etc…?
No sir, he did not. I’m not kidding. He keeps written notebook records.
How many performers were there?
Including him, 8 or 9. And NOT ONE showed me lab results.
On her next trip to Atlanta, Chase shot a second bukkake scene for South on Feb 12 or 13th.
But by then her January 6th TTS test result was out of date.
“I was going to get tested again for the second one, and he told me not to because there wasn’t going to be penetration.”
“Penetration” meaning vaginal or anal sex. More on this later….
Once again, Chase was never shown any STD test results for the group of men who participated in the scene.
“I asked if they were tested — he replied yes. I didn’t ask how. I honestly think it’s a money thing. He had made the comment to me to ‘not waste my money.'”
“These guys aren’t getting paid. These are basically shoots he sets up at a hotel — fly-by-night BS. He has a button on southernbukkake. Guy sends pic of himself and [driver’s] license. South checks it, if the guy is good, he performs. He gets the date and time a bit in advance and room info same day.”
The scenes involved oral sex, not just ejaculation on you, correct?
Yes, oral sex and facials.
Chase had brought her partner Brian along to perform in the bukkake shoot “because South didn’t think we had enough guys.”
But Brian had never tested at TTS or through FSC/PASS, and is not listed in any performer testing database.
So Brian only tested with the OraQuick, correct?
He [South] didn’t bother to test Brian, even though we asked, because “I knew him.”
Brian was completely untested.
TRPWL asked Brian to confirm the circumstances of his performing in a Mike South bukkake scene.
He replied: “I was not asked to provide or take any test for STDs or otherwise, as I was vouched for by the talent.”
Someone vouched for him, and that was good enough for Mike South.
Lots of people would have vouched for Marc Wallice in 1998, and Mr. Marcus in 2012.
As reported previously, when South and Chase traveled to Florida to supposedly do “a bunch of shoots” later in February, South suggested himself as the male talent in an oral sex scene with Chase.
On that trip, did South ever show you a current test or ask you for a current test before he suggested that he do a BJ scene with you?
No, he didn’t show one or ask.
Did he state that the wanted to use condoms?
He DID NOT state he wanted to use condoms.
Did South require condoms or an STD lab test for you, Lindsey Lovehands, and whoever else was involved in the material you shot?
No, he did not.
Victoria Quinn is a dancer and amateur performer from Georgia who performed in a bukkake scene for Mike South in the fall of 2013. Quinn says she had no current STI test at the time of the shoot.
Quinn described the circumstances to TRPWL:
“He [South] had the guy talents — well, random guys that have shot with him … bring in that ‘at home HIV swab test’ that you can get at local stores,” she recalls. “I saw each of them get swabbed and if they passed they were good.”
“From what I recall I was not asked by Conor [Coxxx, an unlicensed talent agent whom South endorses] nor Mike to get tested.”
In advance of the shoot, one of Coxxx’s “recruiters” asked Quinn if she had a current test.
“I honestly answered no because . . . I wasn’t told [to] and I just was, ‘uh was I supposed to be?'”
“The recruiter’s question got me worried — but Conor had told me in the past that girls weren’t tested (or were [for their pro shoots] since it’s required with Talent Testing), but he told me they do HIV testing [on South’s set] and the girls who had done it like XXX and XXXXX said it was fine and never noticed anything internally wrong with themselves or positive test results in the near future.”
Asked if she had ever been swabbed with an OraQuick test for the shoot with South, Quinn replied:
“I was not swabbed on set or asked to provide one to get swabbed.”
“He has a notebook,” says Quinn. “He noted down if they passed and put the slip in the binder. Then he returned the used box back to the men, thinking he didn’t want trash in the hotel room.”
“It was a bukkake, so I only did oral, so no condoms were involved, and since I knew the guys were only HIV tested I never swallowed or let anyone shoot in my eyes or mouth.”
The Risk to Performers
Should every partner in a multiple male oral sex / blow bang / bukkake sex scene be tested, as the adult industry’s PASS testing protocols require? And if so, at what kind of risk does Mike South place performers by shooting in this manner?
To answer this question, TRPWL reached out to Sixto Pacheco, President & CEO of Talent Testing Service (TTS).
Pacheco kindly referred our questions to Dr. David Smith, M.D., M.A.S., an infectious disease specialist who heads TTS’ Internal Medical Council and Outreach Program
Dr. Smith confirms that there is indeed a risk of transmission of “mucosal STIs: gonorrhea, chlamydia, HSV, HPV and syphilis” during a male/female oral sex performance: to or from the male or the female, from the oral sex itself — and to the female from ejaculation into the mouth or eyes.
When asked whether within a multiple male / single female oral sex performance there existed a possibility of transmission of an STI between males, based upon the males sharing the same female mouth/throat, Dr. Smith answered “yes”, adding that “the woman would also be infected.”
Could an on set transmission via oral sex could make it possible for genitals that come in contact with that mouth/throat to become infected?
Dr. Smith again answered yes. “If [the] genital come into contact with an infected mouth, then it is possible that the genital would become infected.”
And this is precisely why the adult industry testing protocols have required regular testing for multiple STIs for well over twenty years.
The question is: why doesn’t Mike South, who has been shooting porn content for over twenty years, understand this — or care?
Mike South, The Lawgiver
Ten months ago, on May 28, 2013, South issued his (unsolicited) counsel on the issue of adult performer testing standards.
His recommendations were the following (emphasis added):
First everyone shoots condom only or doesnt [sic] shoot for a week or two then EVERYONE tests as though they were new to the biz.
When you first come into the biz you get a full battery of tests….HIV, chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hep A B and C, HPV (yes there is a test for men), and Syphilis. If you test positive you don’t work until your test is clean. Hopefully this motivates performers to be more careful in their private lives.
People who are negative for HEP A and B and HPV get vaccinated for them
HIV testing includes both the PCR and the ELISA tests
Prior to every shoot all performers take an instant test for HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and syphilis. Instant tests are available and inexpensive, I am sure that we could get them in quantity for 30 bucks or less for the full panel. If there is a problem administering these tests without proper training then get people trained as part of the licensing requirement.
Every thirty days performers additionally get an HIV test (PCR) and a HEP C test
…
The cost of all testing must be paid for by producers so there will have to be a method to work this out, sure it might be a little difficult but I guarantee you it won’t be as difficult or as costly as trying to fight these laws in perpetuity.
Setting aside the fact that we now know South doesn’t adhere to these standards for his own shoots, these recommendations are premised upon several long-standing (and rather ironic) claims of his, primarily that:
1) If HIV-positive individuals “have been on the anti virals and protease inhibitor drugs [their] viral load will drop low enough that the [qualitative PCR] test will not catch it.” South claims that if someone “has HIV but comes into the biz after taking the anti viral meds will test clean on PCR DNA tests.” South email, May 2013
2) “The big thing here isn’t so much HIV to me, fortunately HIV is actually pretty damn hard to get from heterosexual sex (except anal) to me the big thing is the stuff we dont test for that is at least as dangerous as HIV. Like Hepatitis and HPV. Hep-C will kill you faster than HIV these days.” South email, May 2013
“[I]n truth this whole HIV thing is simply a red herring, a diversion to mask the real problem. That problem being STD rates are rampant in porn and more specifically HIV isn’t nearly as deadly as the hepatitis they don’t test for.” South commenting on LukeIsBack (LIB), April 25, 2012
3) “[T]he real STD rate [in porn] is about 10X what it is in the next closest sample ppoulation [sic] (except maybe homeless drug abusers)” South commenting on LIB March 14, 2012
4) “All it will take is a few performers getting HPV or Herpes or Chlamydia and getting a huge civil judgement and that’ll be the end of it. Thats where these laws REALLY have teeth. It makes it gross negligence if a company shoots without condoms, meaning punitive damages kick in in the event of a civil suit.” South commenting on LIB March 14, 2012
South Has It All Wrong
TRPWL and others have already debunked South’s medical and statistical claims.
The supremacy of PCR viral testing was addressed in this report, and veteran performer/RN Nina Hartley broke it all down in great detail here.
Ad for South’s laughable assertion that an ELISA test is needed because an HIV+ person on ARV meds would test negative on the PCR, there is not a single study in one peer-reviewed medical journal that supports the claim that ARVs make it possible to fool the Aptima test, or the PCR-DNA before it, and a qualitative test such as the Aptima is a different test that the quantitative tests used to measure viral load. (See comments here.)
South claims about HPV are addressed in the second-to-last paragraph here.
As for STI rates in porn, Dr. Lawrence S. Mayer MD, MS, PhD of Johns Hopkins found that the LA County Dept of Public Health reports on adult industry STI data were fatally flawed, and “without basis in science.”
Dr. Mayer’s report may be downloaded here.
Holier Than Thou
Debunked or not, these are assertions that Mike South has stated again and again and again he believes to be true. He claims these to be his principles.
But South’s recommendations, and his supposed concern about on set STI transmission are only half the story.
South also claims that his way of doing things should be held up as a model of responsibility and common sense. He’s pleased that he shoots out in Atlanta — thousands of miles from the professional talent pool concentrated in the Los Angeles area — because, according to him, the L.A. talent pool isn’t safe enough for his rigorous standards.
I am and always have been condom optional….I leave it to the performers. That said would I work in the LA talent pool with no condom? not just no but HELL no, no way…too many escorting females, too many crossover males and testing protocols that would pass an HIV positive person on anti-virals and way too many chances for multiple exposures between tests.
I shoot in a VERY closed loop, I’m way more comfy with that than I am with LA based talent. This bullshit about “I’d rather do an LA performer than some random person in a bar[“] is stupid, it is a FACT that STDS are WAY more common within the LA Talent pool than they are in the standard population, specially here in Atlanta.
HIV gets all the attention but in reality its only the most visible of a LOT of STDs that do long term damage or kill you, most of which we don’t even test for…
In addition to escorts, South also sees danger from drug users:
[M]ale and female escorts, drug users….all of these pose a higher risk not only of HIV but of other STDs.
South, writing on his gossip blog, September 13, 2013
Setting aside the fact that there is NO statistical proof of either performers who escort or their clients transmitting any STIs to each other, logic would tell you that the sex had between a porn star escort and her client would be of no greater risk than sex between that porn star and anyone else he or she could meet off set.
South’s is a silly argument that has been refuted many times before, on TRPWL as elsewhere, however, South’s point is moot because he himself shoots both known female escorts and known drug users in his scenes.
How Other Pornographers Do It
TRPWL reached out to “Porno Dan” a.k.a. Dan Leal of California-based Immoral Productions. Immoral often shoots scenes involving non-professional performers.
Asked what sort of testing her required from members of the general public on his shoots, such as the “Fuck A Fan” series, Leal replied, “the regular adult talent testing panel” — the same series of STI tests that every professional adult performer submits to.
Leal says has been doing it that way since he began — back in 2001.
“Even when we have three guys compete,” says Leal, “say, one guy gets to fuck, one guy’s getting a hand job, and one’s getting a blow job — all three are tested.”
Mike South’s standards for filming sex scenes are far and away lower than those of Porno Dan’s.
In fact, South’s health standards set the clock back to 1997, and the days of ELISA-based HIV testing (see the discussion of the “OraQuick” test, below) and no routine testing for other common STIs.
Is Georgia Safer Than California?
South claims that Atlanta has STI rates that are much lower than the L.A.-based adult talent pool. But since South the amateur porn producer wouldn’t work with members of the L.A.-based talent pool (whose STI rates are addressed above), let’s compare the Georgia general population (from which he draws his non-professional performers) with California’s general population:
Comparison of STI rates in Georgia to California, 2011 (data courtesy the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention):
California:
Georgia:
Detailed views:
Gonorrhea in the Los Angeles, California region
Gonorrhea in the Atlanta, Georgia region
This is just a small sampling of epidemiological data, but what should be crystal clear is that there are plenty of STI’s in Georgia.
Magic Mike
And how does Mike South claim he prevents STI transmission on set?
No system is perfect but common sense goes a long way….maybe that’s why in 20 + years in this industry not one person on any of my shoots has ever contracted any kind of STD. Ever.
But then I won’t shoot just anyone either, I have an interview process and if I don’t like her answers (or his) I don’t care how hot they are I ain’t shooting them.
I can’t think of a girl I didn’t stay in touch with for quite some time after we shot, but that’s because (partially) I interview most of them in person at least twice prior to shooting so we kinda becomes friends.
So, Mike South claims he has special powers: the ability to determine someone’s STI status, or their scene partners’ risk of contracting an STI, based on talking to them twice.
As I told South at the time, “Those are anecdotes, Mike, not data, You know better. It also assumes the performers in question actually know where they caught it and/or desire to tell you. That’s not science and it’s not logic either.”
Setting aside the fact that, without a universal testing AND monitoring/surveillance system that could access records of the test results of all performers with whom he worked both before AND AFTER they worked with him, South could not possibly know for certain whether any of his performers had ever contracted an STI.
Does South honestly expect anyone to believe that 20 years ago when, for example, he shot scenes in hotel rooms at adult conventions, when testing was not what it is now — and new talent went from room to room shooting scenes — some performer showed him even a one or two-day old test, and he can somehow be 100% sure that “not one person on any of [his] shoots has ever contracted any kind of STD”?
People lie about their STI status, people can be mistaken, people can fail to get a follow-up test, etc — it is exceedingly difficult to determine where a sexually active person who is doing scenes contracted an STI, or transmitted an STI – but it is scientifically impossible to know this if one can’t look at a tests for EVERY performer before and after the scene. People walk around with STIs for YEARS without knowing they even have them.
And when Mike South tells people not to bother getting tested, they WON’T find out.
The “OraQuick” Oral Swab HIV Test
Here is the description of the OraSure “OraQuick” test that South relies on (which is also what AHF uses, incidentally) — directly from the manufacturer’s website:
* OraSure is not as accurate as a blood test. For example, it will miss finding 1 to 2 people with HIV out of 100 positive persons tested
* As with blood tests, six to twelve weeks must pass after infection has occurred before enough antibodies have been produced for the test to detect them
* An OraSure test performed THREE months after the potentially infectious event (sex without a condom or shared intravenous drug needles/equipment) is about 95% accurate
* A test at SIX months will be the most accurate.
* The rapid result tests have proven to be highly accurate . . . on a par with or slightly more accurate than standard [ELISA] blood tests
* All positive rapid result tests require us to draw a blood test as a confirming test
As you can see, OraSure is an ELISA-type anti-body test with a window period of 3 to 6 months, six months being the gold standard. It’s about 95% accurate at 90 days.
A PCR test is 95% accurate at TEN days. The claims by AHF and fools like Mike South that ELISA tests are no less effective than PCR testing when it comes to adult performers are simply ridiculous.
“In past cases, ELISA’s have turned up negative on new cases with viral loads in the tens of thousands,” notes adult director and former AIM Healthcare Foundation board member Ernest Greene. “Anyone who walks away from a positive ELISA of any sort with a negative result and feels safe is delusional unless they’ve had no no sexual partners in half a year. Hardly workable for the adult performer community.”
The Hypocrite
Perhaps the most honest thing Mike South has ever written is, “if anything it would benefit me for Porn Valley to fail.”
In light of these revelations, it’s stupefying that South has parroted the AHF party-line on condoms (which is to say he’s engaged in shameful fear-mongering).
[T]ruth is you should be using [condoms] anyway, with the possibility of antibiotic resistant Gonorrhea and now HIV in the talent pool it only makes sense to use condoms.”
South, writing on his gossip blog, December 6th, 2013
While he takes to his website every day to lecture California adult producers — his competitors — about condoms, STIs, performer testing, and Cal/OSHA, Mike South is in Georgia shooting sex scenes without condoms and without STI lab tests.
It’s an outrage, and one might wonder what Georgia OSHA would have to say about it?
Mike South does not respond to TRPWL’s requests for comment, however we invite him to attempt to rebut these serious and troubling allegations.

Most definately OSHA needs to be notified about this scumbag at the very least. It is also illegal to shoot porn in Georgia which is a criminal offense there.
